What to do in summer if you’re a magnet to mosquitoes

26/08/2021
Mosquitoes aren’t just annoying. They carry a number of potentially serious diseases. You don’t have to stay indoors to avoid mosquito bites, though.

If you’re a magnet to mosquitoes, you’ll understand the struggle of finding the right clothes to wear during the hot summer months. Long sleeves and pants can feel stifling, but having itchy bites all over your arms, legs and face doesn’t feel great either.

So how do you strike the perfect balance between covering up and feeling cool? Here are some recommendations:

Look for loose, light-colored clothing that covers as much of your skin as possible.
Ideally, you want to wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts when spending time outdoors in order to reduce the amount of skin that’s exposed. Of course, that’s easier said than done during the hot, humid summer months.
If you can’t fully cover up, do your best to avoid wearing dark-colored clothing, clothes with busy patterns, or heavily scented perfume, cologne or lotion ― all of which attract mosquitoes. (Fun fact: Mosquitoes can’t see light colors as easily as they can dark colors.)
Also, remember to avoid mesh materials, as mosquitoes can bite through loosely woven clothing.

If you can’t cover up, avoid going outside when mosquitoes are most active.
We get it. Covering up during the summer isn’t ideal, not only because of the sweltering temperatures but, hello, cute summer clothes. To help prevent getting eaten up by mosquitoes, It is recommended avoiding being outside in the early morning and around dusk, when mosquitoes tend to be most active.

These  tips go beyond insect repellant to protect you and your loved ones.

Avoid Smelling Good to Mosquitoes
Working out causes you to produce more carbon dioxide and emit lactic acid through your skin, making you more attractive to mosquitoes. If you plan on exercising outdoors, opt for daytime sessions, when mosquitoes are less active. Pregnant women also produce higher amounts of CO2, making it riskier for them to venture outside after dusk. Body odor is equally attractive to these pests, so shower and wear fresh clothing before heading outdoors to help prevent bacteria build-up.

Make Yourself Repulsive to Mosquitoes
Garlic, on the other hand, is a mosquito repellent. Whether you eat it or take it in supplement form, a build-up of garlic in your system makes you less vulnerable to mosquito bites. If you’re not a fan of garlic, an effective insect repellent is helpful when entering damp or otherwise mosquito-prone areas.

Guard Your Home Against Mosquito Invaders
Make sure screens are in good repair and fit tightly inside window and door frames. Regularly empty bird baths and other structures where water can accumulate. Fans do double-duty in the war against mosquitoes. They confuse mosquitoes by dissipating carbon dioxide, and the breeze they create makes it difficult or impossible for mosquitoes to land and bite you. Mosquito nets help keep these pests at bay outdoors or when draped over the bed.
